Cadillac DTS-L: A Longer Caddie for VIPs

Dtsl

Cadillac’s biggest sedan right now is the DTS, but even that isn’t big enough to serve as a de facto limousine. To answer the need for more long-wheelbase vehicles in the livery industry, Cadillac is introducing the new DTS-L. The new Cadillac is certainly long. At 215.6 inches, it’s more than a foot longer than the new Lexus LS 460 L and bests most full-size SUVs in the length department. Rear legroom is 49 inches, which is also considerably more than the Lexus.

The large panel behind the rear passenger windows is meant to provide extra privacy for passengers, but we wonder why the rear seats offer only heat, not the heated and cooling abilities of the front seats. The rear seats don’t recline or offer a footrest, like others in the luxury long-wheelbase segment, either. As an executive car, however, it still delivers an attractive and more upscale alternative to the popular but aging Lincoln Town Car.

Editor’s note: While we realize car shoppers won’t be lining up to buy one of these, it’s still an interesting entry into a niche market that most of us only pay attention to on the way to the airport. For an interior photo click below.

Commenter Of The Day: Church & Dwight Co. Edition [Commenter Of The Day]

One of the oldest companies in the United States, Church & Dwight Co., Inc. was founded by two brothers-in-law who developed sodium bicarbonate in their kitchen. We know sodium bicarbonate better as baking soda, and we know the company better as the group that brought us Arm & Hammer. Cleverly, the company has managed to turn their strong brand name into numerous other products such as toothpaste and cat litter. And though we associate the company with being clean, the acquisition of Carter-Wallace, Inc, brought with it a brand for those doing the dirty deed. The same company that makes Arm & Hammer now makes Trojan condoms. Today we asked if there was a case to be made for automatic transmissions and Ash78 made a strong case for how this issue, and others, can come between a bride and his groom.

Me: It's just not right, it kills the "feel"
Wife: But it's easy and convenient
Me: Says you. I want total control. I want to launch when I say it's time to launch. I want to be able to slow down smoothly and then pick up speed again with the sense of direct connection. Some days are so bad, it's my only fun and creative outlet. Both in the morning and in the afternoon. I just don't see it changing.
Wife: Whatever. Feels pretty much the same to me.

And thats just the condom discussion.

Zing!

EPIC calls for some unity on the ethanol issue, darnit

Holidays in the U.S. are used for so much more than celebrating. We've got President's day sales, the Christmas shopping season, special Easter candy flavors (notice a trend?). For the Fourth of July, something to do with being free is often in order, and this year the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC) has decided that it's energy independence that we need to focus on as a country, dagnabit.

EPIC has put out a statement calling for "unity in search of solutions." By coming together, fellow Americans, EPIC thinks that July 4th could become Energy Independence Day, with ethanol and other renewables for all. A few smarter driving sacrifices (if you can call consolidating trips when gas is at $4/gallon a sacrifice) and increased biofuel output would shift the balance of domestic vs. foreign energy sources to a more homegrown one.

Note: if we're going to be using corn to make all of this ethanol, let's not forget that October 16 is World Food Day.

BMW is Going to Sell its 3.0L Diesel in the US...Finally!

bmw335dbadge.jpg
It seems that the US always gets screwed compared to the models that Europe and Japan get. This includes diesel vehicles which are finally starting to make a comeback here. By 2009 many of the world's largest automakers will start selling their "clean" diesels in the US and you can now add BMW to that growing list.

The Porsche 9ff GT9 is nearly ready to chase down the Bugatti Veryon

Watch out Veyron, Porsche 9ff GT9 nearing completion

The engineers are 9ff are nearly ready to put to task their retooling of the Porche 911 Turbo. They will be taking on the Bugatti Veyron who is sitting pretty as the fastest production model car with a record of 253mph. To breach the record 9ff has made some minor *wink wink* modifications to the Turbo’s horsepower to increase the output from just over 500 all the way up to just over 900. They have also garnered the expert assistance from H&R on the suspension and chassis to keep this record challenging Porsche gripping the pavement.

The production run of the Porsche 9ff GT9 is reported to be 20 cars with a price tag of $651,405. If they are successful at supplanting the Bugatti as the fastest car in production they will also be undercutting it in price by nearly $400,000. …And who does not like a fast discount?

A little bit country – Crosleys embrace farm theme

Crosley wagon at Crosley nats

I know I missed a lot by not attending the Crosley Auto Club’s national meet a couple weeks ago, but the photos that club webmaster Jim Bollman has posted to the club’s website helped a little with filling me in on the happenings. One microtheme I noticed in the photos was a tendency to mix Crosleys into a farming theme. Does it come from the fact that Crosleys are often found in barns nowadays, as the wagon above displays?

"bran-fresh" Crosley

"barn-fresh" Crosley

farm-use Crosley

Or maybe it’s because Crosleys hail from Ohio, up there in the grain belt?

Crosley Deere

Crosley Deere

Or maybe it’s just because Crosley people are a little off-kilter?

Will GM be able to drop dealers?

dealer-carsPart of GM’s restructuring plan calls for reducing their massive network of 6,200 dealers by 25 percent.

Few will argue the logic behind that thinking. The ones who will argue are the dealers in that unfortunate 25 percent, a group who will very likely make life even more difficult for GM.

In fact, it’s happening already. According to the Detroit Free Press, Alabama dealership Abercrombie Chevrolet is suing GM and GMAC, claiming a conspiracy by the two to break its franchise agreement “in an effort to shut down dealers and avoid paying franchise buyout fees.”

Franchise agreements, or dealer franchise laws, do things like restrict GM’s freedom to open new dealerships near existing ones. More importantly, they make it nearly impossible for an auto manufacturer to simply shut down a dealership. GM will have to get dealers to agree to close up shop, which will mean buying them out. Dropping brands and reducing the number dealers may very well cost more than it saves.

In my opinion, two things that are holding automakers back from success are union agreements and these dealer franchise laws. On some levels I feel sorry for GM, because the union says they can’t let people go, and the franchise laws say stores can’t be closed. What’s a company to do?

Abercrombie Chevrolet is accusing GM of wrongly withholding rebates, warranty claims, and other money due to the dealership while GMAC is demanding a bigger cash deposit “in an effort to drive them out of business.”

GM denies any wrongdoing. And according to the restructuring plan submitted to the government, GM expects to close 2,326 dealers by 2014.

If this lawsuit is any indication, it’s going to take billions of dollars and many more lawsuits before that will happen.

Do you think GM can succeed in closing so many dealerships?

Detroit supplier organizing March of Green Vehicles to Washington

Bad idea: Detroit 3 CEOs showing up for a Congressional hearing to beg for money in private jets. Good idea: said CEOs showing up at Congress' curb in their respective company's greenest vehicles. Just such a caravan has been proposed by Tim Leuliette, CEO of supplier Dura Automotive Systems Inc., and it's gaining steam. The idea is to highlight how integral the Detroit automakers are to the lives of many who work outside the companies themselves, and to showcase their latest fuel efficient models.

Expect the march to Washington to remain a grassroots effort. Each of the Detroit 3's spokespeople have commented that they are in support of the plan but are not interested in organizing it. It is also highly unlikely that any Detroit 3 CEO would travel to D.C. in the motorcade, as well. To be as effective as possible, some are suggesting that the organizers create a central website with information for those who want to participate like where they should go and when they should be there. Now, if Bob Lutz lead the procession in a Volt mule, that'd send a message. Do it, Bob!

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R completes inaugural run of Baja 1000

When Ford developed the F-150 SVT Raptor R, the Blue Oval wanted to make sure that it could offer the ultimate in off-road performance. We were pretty much sold after experiencing the truck in the Nevada desert, but Ford wanted to prove the Raptor's capabilities to the world. So Ford entered a modified version of the truck into the Baja 1000, confident that the race-ready Raptor could hold its own in the 631-mile competition. The SVT team entered with realistic expectations, hoping to simply finish a race that has a knack for providing unexpected challenges at every turn. Mission: accomplished. The SVT Raptor not only crossed the finish line, but it did so with flying colors by finishing third in the Class 8 division. This is especially impressive considering the Raptor is built for the lower-level Stock Full class in which it couldn't compete because the production version is not yet for sale. For more details you can check out PickupTrucks.com's live blog of the race, and we've also posted a short video of the SVT Raptor in action, along with the press release, after the jump.

Auto Union D-Type: Der Führer’s Favorite

Auto Union D Type: Der Führers Favorite
Historical and rare, this Auto Union D-Type Grand Prix racer is up for auction in August at the Bonhams & Butterfields sale at the Quail Lodge in Carmel, California. This car, chassis number 19, is only one of three in existence today. It has a 3.0 liter V12 supercharged engine developing a monstrous 485 horsepower - a brutal number even at today’s standards. Oh, this car was also regarded as Hitler’s favorite. He didn’t race the car though, he simply watched his driver friends rule the podiums during the ‘39 Grand Prix season. You can get the car and get a rare piece of history that goes along with it. The August 14 auction estimates the car’s price will fetch about $8,000,000.

$1,000 to Woo Sedan Owners to Chrysler Sebring

2007chryslersebring_1

Do you lease a Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima or Ford Fusion? Are you happy with them? If not, Chrysler is offering $1,000 to anyone who trades in a competing model when they buy a new Chrysler Sebring. The redesigned Sebring is entering extremely competitive waters and we’re not sure if $1,000 would be enough to sway an already happy driver.

While it might seem like a desperate move, the program – which runs through Nov. 30 – brings attention to a redesigned car that hasn’t garnered much buzz since its release. It also brings in barely used, highly sought after cars to dealerships when the cars are traded in. We understand Chrysler doesn’t want to put a true rebate on a brand-new car but they could’ve come up with something a little more persuasive.

Maybe these people can save Detroit’s Big 3…

We salute you, automotive task force

We salute you, automotive task force

But sometimes something so ridiculous comes up that you just have to comment on it. Take this Detroit Free Press article, directed at President Obama’s automotive task force, as an example.

The article attempts to sway the task force by telling the stories of some people affected by the automotive decline.

I just wonder why we’re supposed to feel more sorry for auto workers than anyone else who suffers a job loss or other financial hardship. Take this, for example:

Shirley and Wally Triffle expect their monthly health insurance bill to jump from $78 to about $700 come April 1, when autoparts maker Delphi Corp. cuts off 15,000 salaried retirees from health insurance.

The Triffles go on to say this means they won’t be able to take their grandkids on trips anymore. Sad, huh? Wow, maybe the government SHOULD bail them out. Or maybe Grandpa Wally should just invite the munchkins over to watch Pirates of the Caribbean instead of paying for them to cruise on it.

Then there’s this little gem:

In 34 years of selling cars, Vince Glod has seen good markets and bad… But he has the solution: Credit. The Obama administration needs to push lenders to ease up, Glod said. “A lot of people still want to buy cars but their marginal credit could prevent them from doing that.”

Right. Have you watched the news lately, Vince? Wasn’t there something a while back about how easy, cheap credit brought down the lending industry and then the whole dang economy with it? Hmm… sounds familiar. Wanting to buy a car and being able to buy a car are two very different things, and a powerful reason our economy fell off a cliff.

As I was reading the comments at the end of the article I was refreshed by a little common sense from an unlikely source who went by the name of Williams782:

As much as it pains me to say it, as a GM employee, I would tell the government to let General Motors fail. Just as a parent might use tough love with a child, the government must use it with GM. In order for GM to survive, they need the type of protection from lawsuits bankruptcy protection provides so that they can fully restructure. Because I want my job in the future, I along with all other GM employees must feel the pain now so that we can all prosper together in the future.

Well said, brother.

Do you think stories like these will influence Obama’s automotive task force to give more money to GM and Chrysler?

Commenter Of The Day: Volvo 780 Edition [Commenter Of The Day]

The Volvo 780 is one of the those cars you rarely see on the road but always notice. Designed by Bertone, it is one of only a handful of true Volvo coupes (Bertone, of course, designed the previous iteration). Though not a fast car by European coupe standards, a later GT example came equipped with an independent rear suspension, 200 HP turbo Volvo powerplant and a four-speed manual transmission. Despite remaining brick-like, the Volvo 780 stands out as one of the best looking Volvos of the era. When production ceased in 1990 there were fewer than 10,000 of them made. As much as we appreciate advanced technology, it just isn't as much fun without good design. That's what JDuffy13 seemed to think in our NASA Lunar Rover post.

The lines absolutely suck on this thing!

Hire some bloody Italian designers already will you NASA?

Wow, more American automobile drivel. It's like one step away from the Corvette. Blech!

We're not 100% sure he's being sarcastic.

Triumph Trans-AmeriCan Charity Drive visits Hemmings

group

John Macartney, who’s undertaking a 10,500-mile crossing of the U.S. and Canada by Triumph Stag to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder, arrived at Hemmings World Headquarters in Bennington, Vermont, yesterday. Accompanying John, who’s third from left in this photo, were more than a dozen members of Brits of the Hudson, a multi-marque club based in New York’s Hudson Valley.

John’s effort is being supported by, so far, nearly 50 individual host clubs across the continent. To see his travel route, visit the TTACD website, which is updated pretty much daily.

uncle jack

The Stag, which John has nicknamed “uncle jack,” was purchased and restored with donations from U.S. Triumph enthusiasts. Now that we’ve looked at (and ridden in) the car, we can tell you that the volunteers of the Illinois Sports Owners Association who restored the car are a highly talented bunch.

john

After an overnight stay, John and the Stag headed out this morning, bound for Montreal.  It was an absolute delight meeting him, and if you have an opportunity to catch up with him on his travels, you should by all means do so. Check back for occasional updates on his progress, and for a podcast of an interview with John.
