The 2009 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid: Well, It’s Not As Ugly As The Panamera

Although there are rumors swirling that later versions of Porsche’s new phallic-shaped 2010 Panamera will be a Parallel Hybrid, the 2009 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid has already taken the title of Porsche’s first hybrid vehicle. With a $44,600 price tag, the new Cayenne Hybrid boasts an EPA fuel estimate of roughly 24-26 mpg, about a 20% increase from Cayenne’s of years past.

Offered in AWD, the Cayenne’s 6-sp automatic transmission and 3.6L V6 direct-inject engine certainly appears at first blush to fairly run-of-the-mill for Porsche – but upon closer inspection, Porsche has managed to crank out some pretty impressive hybrid upgrades. Technically considered a Series Hybrid, the ’09 Cayenne Hybrid features a 34 kW electric motor that, combined with the gasoline engine, boosts the Cayenne Hybrid’s already impressive torque from 273 lb-ft to over 400 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm. Coupled with an aggressive, Porsche-standard, 290-hp, the Cayenne hybrid definitely ensures that the kids will get to Segway-polo practice on time.
