This year's Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) should be even bigger than last year despite dropouts

Thanks to your suggestions, last month we added a Google Calendar after the jump so you can bookmark it and constantly receive updates as we add them. We appreciate all of your input and hope you find our calendar a useful tool. We also appreciate your comments listing events we might have overlooked or that are just near-and-dear to your hearts.

Highlights for January include the North American International Auto Show, which we will be covering extensively from Detroit; the Arizona collectible car auctions featuring Barrett-Jackson, RM Auctions, Russo and Steele and others; the La Jolla Motorcar Classic at The Cove; the Cavallino Classic from The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida; and the kickoff of the 2009 motorsports season with the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

As always, we want to give a shoutout to our two favorite sources; The New York Times automotive calendar for national and international stuff, and for local stuff here in Southern California, our buddy Dave Lindsay's SoCalCarCulture pages. Dave's photographic coverage of these local events is fantastic. So check out the January event calendar we put together for you after the jump and start adding to it. Happy New Year, everyone!

Cobra Daytona hauls in $7.25 million

Back in 1967, Bob Bondurant sold a Cobra Daytona for a paltry $4,000. Over the weekend, Bondurant (pictured above right in the red shirt) watched a Daytona cross the block for an astounding $7.25 million at Mecum’s inaugural Monterey sale,  setting a record for the highest price paid for an American car at public auction, according to Mecum.

“Selling this amazing piece of American race history at our first Monterey auction has been the crowning achievement of my career and Mecum Auction’s 22 years of selling collector cars,” said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auction. “This hand-built car beat the fastest cars in the world and has now added another ‘win’ to its list of accomplishments.  It certainly finished in record form again.”

Mecum deserves credit for cranking up the publicity machine in major fashion for this one, though this is clearly the ultimate catch for the Shelby cognoscenti.

The 1965 Daytona Cobra was one of six cars built by Shelby to compete against Ferrari in the FIA World Manufacturers Championship GT class.  It stared out as an experimental coupe body designed by Peter Brock built on an existing Cobra chassis, immediately increasing the top speed by 25 mph. That car won its first race, the 1964 Daytona Continental (hence the car’s Daytona name), and five more coupes were built, including CSX2601, the car that sold on Saturday.

After competing at Daytona, Monza, Spa and Nurburgring, CSX2601 clinched the 1965 World Manufacturers Championship on July 4 in Reims, France, with Bondurant at the wheel.

Wanted: Sooner Sports Cars

I will be coming down to Tulsa to cover the Leake auction on the weekend of June 14th, and wouldn’t mind rounding up a car or two to photograph while there. We’ve got decent classic and muscle car contacts, but aside from one (very cool) 1970 Mazda, there are no sports cars in our files.

(note: this is a 1967 Mazda Luce, but it is from Oklahoma)

So if you’re anywhere near Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Ft. Smith - whatever’s west of Tulsa or Enid, I guess - with a car in which you think Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car might be interested, drop me a line. I’d consider going as far as Wichita if it was something special.

I’m planning on keeping Sunday the 14th open for photography, but I could probably fit a shoot in almost anytime on Friday or Saturday as well.
