Chrysler Wants Another $1.5 Billion to Give Out More Auto Loans

Chrysler Chief Executive Bob Nardelli is asking for another $1.5 billion from the US government to fund the company's financial arm, which would allow for more loans to individuals that haven't been able to qualify.

Due to the credit crunch it has become increasingly harder for individuals to receive financing, since banks are now requiring better credit scores and higher down payments.

In January the US government gave $1.5 billion to Chrysler Financial, which allowed Chrysler to subsidize zero percent interest loans on new vehicles.

1986 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Here's a type of car I've been hunting for since this series began, a machine so 80s it's like Ollie North in pink leg warmers: the Dodge Daytona Turbo Z! We've seen some members of the extended Chrysler K Family (such as this Aries and this Reliant), but now it's time to see one of the sporty Ks (technically a G, but close enough).

This one isn't exactly pristine, but it's not too rough for a 22-year-old car that few have ever considered a real classic. You got 146 turbocharged horsepower out of the 2.2 in your '86 Turbo Z, which moved the 2,630-pound car pretty well for the era.


Back in the turbo-mad 80s, you had to advertise the hairdryer's presence with emblems all over the place… but was a window trim emblem really necessary? The price tag on one of these things came to $11,301, which was about a grand cheaper than a new Nissan 200SX turbo and $1,200 less than the IROC-Z Camaro. The price of an '86 Ford Mustang SVO? $15,272!

Chrysler officially hops on board 12-state credit union loan band wagon

Last week, GM partnered with credit unions in four states to offer up to $10 billion in new car loans and incentives. Not one to be left shivering alone in the cold, and with November sales down nearly 28% compared to last year, Chrysler LLC has just announced their own 12-state credit union program allowing its customers access to upwards of $12 billion in auto loan financing. The partnership (also called "Invest in America") gives participating credit union members additional $500 to $1,000 rebates on most Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge vehicles. Steven Landry, Chrysler's executive VP of North America sales, says, "We are confident that the Invest in America program and credit union member cash will provide significant value for our customers and the economy as a whole during these challenging times." While additional cash on the hood of a new Chrysler sounds appealing, we really don't think that buyers are avoiding showrooms due to a lack of financial incentives -- it's been a buyer's market for months.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

From outside the Dodge Grand Caravan, there isn’t a lot to wow the eyes of potential minivan shoppers. The all-new Grand Caravan is certainly not as eye-catching as the Nissan Quest or Toyota Sienna. No, it — and the Chrysler Town & Country — is boxy, tried and true. All the interesting stuff is underneath the skin.

The big “must-have” feature is the Swivel ‘n Go seating system with two second-row captain’s chairs that can rotate 180 degrees to face the third row. There’s also a removable table for those Texas hold ’em fanatics or — more appropriate for the target market — travel board games like Battleship.

The interior finally catches up to the rest of the Dodge family, but we’ve found even those new vehicles to be a step below the competition. Also note the strange position of the shifter, right next to the gauge cluster. That has to be the oddest positioning we’ve ever seen, and until proven otherwise during a test drive we won’t believe it’s a more convenient placement than the standard column shifter. What is cool for the family set is an optional power fold-flat third row of seats and standard stability and traction control, plus side curtain airbags for all three rows.

Dodge Nitro 2007

Drivers can now enjoy the new NitroDodge, whose name seems like a great big boy truck, and who is equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 petrol engine or a 2.8-litre diesel with 460Nm of torque. Though it gives smooth changes and the handling is a letdown, with a fair degree of body roll to contend with in corners, it competes alongside models including Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Pathfinder and Kia Sorento, with extremely competitive prices(the base diesel comes under £20.000).

Those how will own a Nitro should notice the difference between its solid and expensive exterior,and the cheap and brittle plastics from the interior, with dominating square lines, and an exceptionally shallow dash for a SUV; You can’t miss the pistol-grip handbrake, or the good headroom,but therear seats do not offer enough underthigh support. Moreover, the servicing costs are low, taking into consideration the diesel isn’t very economical.
